Canada’s 5.1% Unemployment Rate Is Lowest Since 1976

Statistics Canada reported that 39,800 Canadian jobs were filled in May 2022 and that over 135,000 workers were hired for full-time employment. This reduced the country’s unemployment rate to only 5.1 percent (the lowest since 1976). Additionally, the latest data reveals that there are 500,000 additional people employed in Canada than there were when the worldwide pandemic began. Canada is experiencing a major worker shortage and employers are paying higher wages to recruit new employees. During the past 12 months, the average hourly wage paid for Canadian employment rose 3.9% to $31.12 per hour.
